Freda Mae Merideth

Freda Mae Merideth, born on November 3, 1928, in Goodwater, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025, in the comfort of her home in Bismarck,  at the age of 96. She was the daughter of the late Grayfer Abney and Isla (Evans) Abney.
Freda began her career in education at Cadet School, where she met her beloved husband, James T. Merideth Sr. They were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church of St. Clair on November 8, 1947, sharing 35 years of life and love together until his passing on May 2, 1982. Freda devoted her professional life to the field of education, specializing in Special Education. Her journey took her through various roles, including positions at the Rockwood School, a one-room schoolhouse, and St. Clair Elementary, from which she ultimately retired.
Her commitment to community service extended beyond her teaching career. Freda served as a Girl Scout Leader and was actively involved in the Parent-Teacher Association. Throughout her life, she worked hard to provide for her family and cared for her sisters, Pauline and Charlotte, until their passing.
Freda’s educational journey included graduating from Valley Caledonia and earning her Master’s Degree in Education from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri. She was known for determination and dedication, traits that echoed in her personal life as well. A lifelong member of Moose Lodge #1745 in Union, Missouri, she also attended First Baptist Church for many years with her late husband and later attended Mount Zion Baptist Church, both of St. Clair.
Her interests were diverse; Freda loved reading, solving crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, and reminiscing over old photographs, often sharing stories about the memories encapsulated within them. She was also an avid swimmer and often volunteered at various clubs and church activities, reflecting her passion for helping others.
Freda is survived by her daughter, Rene Merideth, of Los Angeles, California; son, James T. Merideth Jr. and his wife Kim of Columbia, South Carolina; and three grandchildren, James T. Merideth III, Jaimie Marie Merideth, and Quang Merideth. All of whom will carry her memory in their hearts.
Along with her beloved husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Pauline Abney and Charlotte Abney, and several uncles, aunts, and cousins. 
Visitation for Freda will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025 at DeClue Funeral Home from 5 until 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Living Hope Church - St. Clair from 10 a.m. until her funeral service, beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at Mount Zion Baptist Cemetery, St. Clair. 
Services are under the direction of DeClue Funeral Home, Potosi.
