OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

September 11, 2024

Sheriff Zach Jacobsen has released a report that the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control is currently investigating a deputy involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday, September 10th, 2024 at approximately 10:45 p.m. At the Roy's Convenience Store in Richwoods on Highway 47.
Deputies were dispatched and responded to Roy's Convenience Store in Richwoods, Missouri to investigate a trespassing complaint.
Upon arrival, deputies contacted the reporting party who was a store employee and confirmed that the subject parked in a pickup truck on the parking lot was trespassing on the property.
Deputies approached the subject who was seated in the driver's seat of the pickup and spoke with him about information. During the contact, the subject provided a false name and pedigree information.
Deputies were advised by the employee they wanted the subject removed from the property.
Deputies again contacted the subject (later identified as David M. Peter, 36 years of age) and requested him to exit the vehicle.
A Deputy opened the driver's side door and instructed Peter to exit the vehicle. Peter refused the instructions and started the vehicle, placed the vehicle in drive and tried to flee. The Deputy tried to stop Peter's advancement by placing the vehicle in Park but was unsuccessful.
Peter accelerated his vehicle forward, while the deputy was partially inside it. Peter struck one Deputy's patrol vehicle pinning the Deputy between it and his own vehicle causing injury to the Deputy.
The Deputies, fearing for their safety and the safety of others, discharged their weapons, striking Peter.
Peter's vehicle then struck a second Deputy's patrol vehicle.
Peter was pronounced dead by Washington County Coroner Steve Hatfield at the scene on Highway 47.
One Deputy sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Jacobsen said, "I requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol to the scene to complete the use of force investigation."
The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigation along with the Washington County Coroner's investigation will be sent to the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney's Office upon completion.
Sheriff Jacobsen closed by saying, "I will not be releasing the names of the Deputies involved until the investigation is complete, nor will I release any further information not contained here."
