This past Friday, May 20th, 2022 marked a milestone for Fourché Valley Golf Course as golfers and public officially marked thirty years of golf in Washington County.

The day was sunny and bright, with a strong wind that challenged some golfers. The course hosted an 18 hole golf tournament that benefitted local charities as part of the anniversary celebration.

Danetta Coleman, course manager, welcomed everyone to a brief ceremony at approximately 11:30 a.m., between rounds of the charity tournament at the course pro shop.

Kurt Kallaus, Board President and Don Thompson, Board Member spoke briefly about the course and the work and help it has taken to keep Fourché Valley going over the years.

30 year members were recognized - Marty Simpson, Jim Politte, Rick DeGonia and Dave DeGonia.

The Fourché Valley Golf Course opened to play in May of 1992 after lengthy design and construction by the Hale Irwin Golf Services, Inc.

An ‘Open House’ was held on Friday, May 15th, 1992 at 2 p.m. and everyone was invited. A large group gathered to enjoy a course dedication and course tours with food and prizes.

The course was developed by Sunnen Products Company of St. Louis and leased to the Fourché Valley Public Golf Association.

The first description of the course, that went with the opening, said, “Nestled in the wooded Ozark hills, Fourché Valley Golf Course features a gently rolling terrain, natural rock outcroppings and waterfalls and a spring-fed creek which meanders lazily through the course.”

Ron Suchanek, Director of Corporate Administration at Sunnen, said that ‘great care was taken to preserve the natural surroundings’.

Fourché Valley Golf Course has seen some changes yet the footprint of the original course and facility is all still intact.

Several holes have become golfer’s favorites and also, perhaps, their biggest challenge.

The course offers a good variety of challenges on the nine hole layout and also has a fully stocked golf shop that has food and refreshments readily available when the course is open for play.

The Potosi High School Trojans field a golf team based at the course and there have been numerous benefit tournaments over the years that have helped support the community.

Fourché Valley celebrated 30 years of play in the community on Monday, May 16th, 2022.

The Anniversary Charity Tournament benefitted several local charitable organizations. The format was set up so that each team chose a group or project to benefit before they played. The winning team in the Championship Flight was JayCee Dental and benefitted the Potosi Elks Lodge Monroe Harvey Scholarship Fund. Second place was Farm Bureau and they picked the Potosi Elks Back Pack Program as their cause.

In the A Flight, Don’s Radiator won and benefitted the Potosi Football Boosters. Second place was American Family Insurance who sent their donation to the Potosi Elks Back Pack Program.

In the B Flight, the winner was Commercial Flooring who sent their donation to ‘In Memory of Charlie’ and there was a tie for Second between First State Community Bank, benefitting Caring Hearts Pregnancy Resource Center, and Liberty Security, who chose the local Cops For Kids program. Congratulations to the winners and a big ‘thank you’ for supporting the community.

The course, Hwy. 8 West, is open to the public as weather permits.
