Edition hosted a book signing by Matt Akers on Friday, Oct. 8th at coffee shop and book store. Matt is the son of Elmer and Kathy Akers, Potosi. Andrew and Hillary Eye, left, hosted the guest signing at their shop with Matt & Glenda Akers and mom, Kathy. Matt said he was happy to be able to come home for a visit and his approaching to writing is a daily process.

Matt Akers said he has learned over the years, writing is a process and his is daily. When talking about writing a book, he said, “A few pages a day and it adds up. My approach is to do a little at a time and keep going.”

Matt is the son of Elmer and Kathy Akers, and, unknown by ‘Mom & Dad’, had come home to visit and attend a surprise Anniversary party that was being held on that Friday, Oct. 8th evening for the couple.

Glenda, Matt’s wife, joined him along with a daughter on the trip back to Potosi for the weekend.

Matt has been working on his education, or continuing education, for years. He graduated from Potosi High School in 1995. He went on to get his Associate degree and Bachelor degree at Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas.

Akers continued his pursuit of education with a Master degree and several PhD’s through the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis, Tennessee.

Glenda also has pursued higher education, earning her Master of Arts in Spanish from the University of Memphis.

The couple have three children, Josiah, who is a freshman in college; Jennifer, who is a Junior in high school and Kathryn (Katie) who is in the eighth grade.

Matt said he has written four books and another is underway. His studies have brought him the opportunity to put ‘pen to paper’ and share his knowledge with the public.

Matt has three PhD’s that started with Old Testament and Hebrew with minors in New Testament and Greek, theology in 2005. He received doctorate degrees in 2015 for Biblical Counseling and in 2021 for Missions.

Matt is the Associate Dean of Doctoral Studies at the Mid-America Baptist Theological Society in Memphis.

With the publishing of his book One Lord, One Faith, College & Clayton Press’ John M. Lewis offers a review online. The review includes a small insight into the book offering from Akers.

Jesus told his closest followers that people would know they were his disciples by their love for one another (John 13:35). Fellowship is among the many fruits that sprout from the sincere affection our Lord emphasized. Sadly, however, fellowship fails to reach its highest potential in some Christian circles. One such challenge that exists in the United States is the relative lack of unity between believers from different ethnocultural backgrounds. The book of Acts contains numerous accounts of Jewish, Samaritan, and Gentile Christians who learned to weave their lives together for the glory of Christ and for their mutual benefit, and we can learn much from these efforts. In One Lord, One Faith, Matt will examine these vibrant narratives and will apply the lessons therein to twenty-first century Christians.

Dr. Akers serves as the Associate Dean of Doctoral Studies as well as the Director of the Hispanic Institute at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis, TN. In addition to these roles, he also pastors La Iglesia Bautista Nueva Vida and is the Executive Vice President of Guatemala Children’s Mission, a ministry that provides Christian-based education to underprivileged children in Chimaltenango. Matt, who is a native of Missouri, became interested in racial reconciliation and multiethnic ministry in large part because of his marriage to Glenda, who is originally from the Central American country of El Salvador. He and Glenda consider their children to be among their greatest blessings.

In One Lord, One Faith, Matt examines the role of fellowship in Christian community and the impact it has on unity within the church.
